Experimental tests of conditional reinforcement often employ chained schedules in which two or more schedules of reinforcement, signalled by unique exteroceptive stimuli, are presented successively. Conditionally reinforcing effects of a stimulus within the chain can then be assessed by instituting extinction and comparing responding in the presence and absence of the putative conditional reinforcer.

As noted by Kelleher and Gollub , extinction procedures avoid the confounding effects of unconditional reinforcers in testing but can inadvertently introduce other problems. For example, extinction may alter the context such that stimuli function differently than in training i.

Kelleher and Gollub also noted that extinction often produces only small effects—presumably because the conditional reinforcer is being simultaneously tested and extinguished.
